Ada Lovelace Day
Ada Lovelace Day is coming to DEI to celebrate the role, talent, and leadership of women in technology and science. This event is designed to inspire the entire community, foster the sharing of real-life experiences, and demystify the various career paths within the scientific and technological ecosystem.
The main program will feature a roundtable discussion bringing together faculty members, researchers, and industry professionals — many with roots at DEI. In an open conversation, the guests will share their career journeys, candidly discussing their successes, the challenges they overcame along the way, and what they might have done differently. The session will conclude with a social gathering and refreshments.
Alongside the event, DEI will host an exhibition highlighting the stories and advice of women from our department. Stay tuned for updates — we will be revealing more information very soon!

ANA ALVES
Ana Alves is a Coordinating Professor and Head of the Department of Informatics and Systems Engineering at the Coimbra Institute of Engineering (Polytechnic University of Coimbra), where she has taught since 2000. She holds a PhD in Information Science and Technology from the University of Coimbra (2012) and has been a researcher in the Cognitive and Media Systems group at CISUC since 2007. Her research interests focus on Artificial Intelligence, particularly Natural Language Processing and Ambient Intelligence, with a focus on inferring the organization and use of urban spaces from web and social media data. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments and is a member of APPIA and the ACL. Mother of two boys, who are now adults, she completed her master's and PhD degrees when they were still young. She therefore advocates that a demanding career in science and technology and a full family life are not mutually exclusive.
INÊS DUVERGÉ
Inês lives at the intersection of design and technology: she started out in multimedia and branding and today designs digital products used by millions of people. She is a Senior Product Designer at Typeform, working remotely from Portugal with globally distributed teams that she meets up with periodically. Prior to that, she spent seven years in London designing products at tech companies like Intercom. Her drive to create goes back a long way: while still a student at the University of Coimbra, she co-founded a small startup with two friends that took them to the finals of Y Combinator in San Francisco—the startup incubator that launched companies like Airbnb and Reddit. She graduated in Multimedia Design in Coimbra and earned her Master’s degree in Branding & Graphic Design from UAL in London.
JOANA MONTEIRO
Joana is a graphic designer and art director with a passion for typography that is evident in her work. She graduated in Painting and Communication Design (ARCA, Coimbra), earned a Master's degree in Graphic Design from the University of the Arts London, and studied at the Royal College of Art. A freelancer since 2007, she works primarily with clients in the cultural sector, such as the Teatro Nacional São João, the English Touring Opera, and CAPC, and has been developing the graphic design work for JACC Records since 2014. She has been recognized with an AIGA "Justified" award (2013), the Sebastião Rodrigues prize (2014), and a Communication Arts Award of Excellence (2019). She is the co-founder of Clube dos Tipos and founder of Editora dos Tipos, where she published, among other works, the Manual Prático do Tipógrafo (2016, Certificate of Typographic Excellence, Type Directors Club) and, more recently, Uma Ode à Tipografia (2025, supported by DgArtes).
MÓNICA SOBREIRA
Mónica Sobreira has 28 years of experience in the technology sector, having spent a large part of her professional career at Critical Software, where she worked on national and international projects across different business areas. She started her career as an intern and, over the years, took on roles of increasing responsibility in software development and delivery, later joining the company’s executive team. In 2025, she participated in the creation of Stadler Digital Labs, a joint venture between Critical Software and Stadler Rail. She currently leads the Talent & Business Support area at Stadler Digital Labs, where she is responsible for talent acquisition and management, organizational development, and business support.
